RFP Submission Deadline: June 1st, 2012

The City is seeking individuals who have the ability to create from a metal medium, a prototype of a metal hanging basket that contains metal flowers, leaves, stems, etc. for the purpose of a possible long term solution for “live” floral baskets that the City has provided, in the past, on some of the light standards within the City.

This pilot project will see those interested in participating, providing a cost quote and design specifications for their rendition of a metal floral basket substantial in size that would compliment the City’s Light Standard.

PROJECT CRITERIA:

The following points are the suggested criteria when considering this prototype project:

The basket and flowers must be made with longevity in mind. The purpose of this project is to provide an eye appealing dimensional basket of metal flowers, leaves, etc. that will remain for years to come with very little maintenance and has a provision for rain and snow drainage for year ‘round display.

The project must be large enough to compliment the City’s light standards (good visible appeal) and will require the means to provide adequate support (e.g. proper gauge chain, metal wire, etc) to securely hang the project and to deter theft.

The metal mix is the artist’s choice; however, the artist should bear in mind metal types that are geared for longevity and cost-effectiveness. The City would prefer if metals that would otherwise fill our landfill could be utilized in the project, but this is not a final determining factor. Powder coating of metal is also a viable option. The City is foremostly seeking the artist’s individual creativity and welcomes all suggestions and ideas.

Independent solar lighting which would highlight the baskets in the evening.(Grand Forks is considered a “Solar City”, and this form of clean energy is encouraged)

The project will be able to provide the means to display a permanent “name of sponsor” on the basket meant for longevity. This is in consideration of a future “sponsor a basket program” that the City may implement should the pilot project prove successful. For this pilot project, “The City of Grand Forks” to be displayed on the basket. The artist may, in addition, display their own unique signature to their artwork.

The City may consider the concepts from more than one artist and acceptance of prototypes will be consistent within the City’s 2012 budget for this project and mindful of the above criteria.

If the 2012 Pilot Project is proven successful, The City of Grand Forks, through it’s annual budgeting process, may determine to continue this program in the following years and offer opportunities to our valued talented artisans.
