Grand Forks Community Sustainability Plan
In 2007, as part of the Gas Tax Funding Program, the City of Grand Forks applied for and received funding to develop an Integrated Community Sustainable Plan. A steering committee was formed, comprising of interested members of the public, as well as a representative from City Staff and various members of Council to work with the City’s consulting firm, Urban Systems Ltd., to determine the elements of the plan. Several meetings were held during 2008, including one for seniors which was held at Boundary Lodge.
A draft document was prepared for circulation just prior to the Municipal General Election in 2008. This circulation included various stakeholders, such as the RDKB, MOT, MOE, and the Ministry of Agriculture, whose comments have all been previously received by Urban Systems. These meeting were all facilitated by Dan Huang of Urban Systems Ltd. Due to City Staff changes and a change in Council in late 2008, which re-focused some of Council’s priorities, the plan development was met with many challenges, including delays. Earlier this year, council expressed a desire to complete the Sustainable Community Plan project.
On June 21st, 2011, a public open house was held to once again, provide the public an opportunity to see the proposed final plan and to make comment. Also on this date, Council members, along with Urban Systems, had a table at the Farmers’ Market to discuss the details of the plan with members of the public.
On June 27th, 2011 Regular Meeting, Council gave first reading to the City of Grand Forks Sustainable Community Plan Bylaw No. 1919, 2011.
On July 18th, 2011 Regular Meeting, Council gave second reading to the City of Grand Forks Sustainable Community Plan Bylaw No. 1919, 2011.
On August 15th, 2011, in accordance with the Community Charter, a Public Hearing will be held at 6:00 pm in Council Chambers at City Hall.
